S omething is blaring. The sound is so loud and piercing it’s painful, and I snap my eyes open with a gasp.

I’m encased in a pod. There is a small glass window that lets me see out, while the rest of this thing is made of metal with a control panel right below the window.

I move to sit up, but find I can’t. I’m strapped down and hooked up to the pod. No amount of tugging and jerking gets me free, so I start to panic.

What the hell is happening? How long I was out, and how long has the alarm been screaming? Where the fuck am I?

Crash!

The sudden noise startles me, but I can’t see anything through the glass. I assumed I was alone, but maybe that’s not entirely true. From the sounds of it, there’s someone—or something—out there making a huge racket.

I shudder.

Crash!

The stench of something burning chokes me as my pod aggressively shakes and rumbles. Metal rips away from the ceiling like paper, and the world outside goes flying by.

I scream as understanding finally dawns. I’m on a ship that’s crashing, and I’m going to die. There’s no way I’ll survive a crash landing, and even if I do, the wildlife on whatever planet this is will likely kill me before the day is out.

As trees appear through the torn metal, I brace myself for the inevitable impact and pinch my eyes closed. Not even a second later, everything jolts as the ship slams into the ground. My head whips to the side, and the world around me disappears.

I think I pass out, because the next time I peel my eyes open, everything is eerily still and silent. I’m in so much pain. The glass of the pod is broken, the spiderweb cracks running the entire length of the window, and beyond that is…

Sand?

Drip.

Drip.

Red drops plop onto the fractured glass and seep beneath the cracks.

Drip.

Drip.

I’m bleeding. But from where? Everything is throbbing too much for me to narrow down where the open wound is. Not that it matters; I still can’t move. There’s no way I’m getting out of the pod without help.

Creak!

What the fuck was that?

Groan!

Something is getting louder, getting closer. Is… Is something shifting the debris around?

Fuck. My blood is probably attracting it. Fucking fuck.

″Go back to the den,” a deep voice growls, startling me so badly I jerk in my restraints. I scream internally and suck in a sharp breath as pain darkens my vision.

″I want to help,” a softer voice replies, this one far less intimidating, but still foreign.

″No,” the beast growls. “It’s not safe.”

″It’s not any safer at the den. A survivor could find our home.”

Drip. Drip.

Drip.

My blood is dripping faster now, and my vision is getting blurry. I can’t afford to lose consciousness. I still don’t know if these two are friends or foes.

″Fine, but stick close,” the first one rumbles. “You don’t leave my side, understand?”

″Yes, alpha.”

Drip. Drip. Drip.

Drip. Drip.

That’s too much blood.

Everything is spinning, and I feel like I’m going to vomit.
